Ex-UMNO youth head got business opportunities from Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR - Former United Mayays National Organization youth head Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has admitted that he was told by former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to raise the issues on nepotism and cronyism during their party general assembly last year.
He also admitted that Anwar had given him business opportunities, including ownership of shares in listed companies on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE). ''I take this opportunity to seek forgiveness from Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad for the things I did when I was leading the UMNO Youth movement,'' he said in a statement to the press at the ongoing UMNO party annual convention here.
Ahmad Zahid, who was removed as the youth leader of the ruling UMNO party of Mahathir soon after the ouster of Anwar last September, had a meeting with Mahathir during the break on the last day of the three-day party meeting. He also admitted that Anwar had asked him to raise the issue of lack of transparency in the allocation of shares and government contracts when Anwar was Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister.
Following Ahmad Zahid's action then, Mahathir had issued the list of recipients of shares in government projects during the party assembly last year, and again on Saturday. Anwar is presently serving a four-year jail sentence for corruption and is being charged in court for sodomy allegations.
Zahid is seen as a close associate of Anwar and his admission Sunday, showed that he has broken rank with Anwar.
