East Timor ballot to be Habibie's prime legacy: adviser
CANBERRA - The autonomy ballot in East Timor promises to be the most important legacy of Indonesian President B.J. Habibie, his adviser said.
Dewi Fortuna Anwar, special adviser to President Habibie, said she believed president Suharto's successor would be remembered as more than a transitional president.
''I believe that he will be remembered as the president who has succeeded in turning Indonesia from an authoritarian system to a more democratic system,'' she told Australian Broadcasting Corp. television Wednesday.
''I think the most important issue also is the question of East Timor. If Indonesia manages to handle this East Timor case successfully as agreed [by the United Nations] in New York, he will be remembered by history as someone who has been able to resolve this very intractable problem very well."
The East Timorese will vote between autonomy and independence in a UN supervised ballot in August.
