ASEAN to officially admit Cambodia on Friday
MANILA - The Association of Southeast Asian Nations will officially admit Cambodia as its 10th member in a formal ceremony to be held in Hanoi on Friday, Philippine Foreign Secretary Domingo Siazon said Tuesday.
The ceremony will be highlighted with the signing of the ''Declaration on the Admission of the Kingdom of Cambodia'' to ASEAN by the 10 ASEAN foreign ministers, including Cambodia's Hor Nam Hong.
Hor will also sign the protocol for Cambodia's accession to ASEAN agreements, Siazon said. These include the ASEAN Zone of Peace, Freedom and Neutrality Declaration, the Declaration of ASEAN Concord and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia.
The ASEAN foreign ministers will then deliver their respective statements. The raising of the national flags of all the 10 ASEAN member countries in the courtyard of the Hanoi Daewoo Hotel will cap the ceremony.
Siazon said Cambodia's admission fulfils ASEAN's vision of a ''Southeast Asia-Ten'' and comes 31 years after ASEAN's founding in Bangkok. Other members are Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
