Malaysia to speed up infrastructure projects for recovery
KUALA LUMPUR - As a measure to revive and stimulate the economy, the implementation of infrastructure projects will be accelerated, according to the mid-term review of the Seventh Malaysia Plan (7MP) by the Economic Planning Unit (EPU).
In carrying out the measure, priority is to be given to projects with high multiplier and spillover effects as well as high local content.
In line with the recommendations of the National Economic Recovery Plan (NERP), critical and strategic projects that contribute to increasing efficiency, productivity and a better life quality will also be implemented.
During the remaining plan period, focus will be given to the completion of critical infrastructure projects which have an impact on the other sectors of the economy.
Emphasis will also be given to improving the quality of life by ensuring accessibility, adequacy and quality of supply in basic amenities.
Overall, a total of RM24 billion (US$1:RM3.80) has been allocated for infrastructure and utility projects in the 7MP which spans the years from 1996 to 2000.
This is actually a revised figure, from RM18,5 billion allocated at the outset of the national five-year development plan.
