Foreign car dealers to go for joint web sales

SEOUL - Foreign car dealers in South Korea will join forces to offer lower prices by taking advantage of the Internet for sales, putting local car manufacturers on alert, industry sources say.

Using a motor show exclusively for imported cars in May as momentum, 12 foreign car companies, including GM and Ford, will open a joint website.

Web car sales, already widely used by leading manufacturers worldwide, means costs related to sales activities. The distribution cost of imported cars accounts for about 10 percent of the price and the Internet can reduce the figure by half.

Some foreign car companies in the country, like GM Korea, are operating their own websites for sales promotion and advertising but they are not impressive enough to disturb local producers, one source says. ''However, the establishment of a joint website would be quite a different story for the impact could be very destructive.''
