Japan to pay $1bn for N. Korean nuclear reactors

Tokyo - Japan agreed to contribute $1 billion to finance the construction of nuclear reactors in NorthKorea, said Agence France-Presse, citing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

A financing agreement for the lightwater reactors - tobe built in exchange for a nuclear weapons freeze by North Korea- was signed in New York Monday with the Korean Peninsula EnergyDevelopment Organization during Japanese Prime Minister KeizoObuchi's visit to the U.S.

Tokyo previously suspended signing thecontract with KEDO - set up by South Korea, Japan and the U.S.in 1995 - when North Korea launched a rocket that flew overJapan on August 31, the report said.
