Japan needs more foreign laborers: Economic Planning Agency
TOKYO - The government's new 10-yeareconomic plan should allow more foreign laborers to immigrateto Japan in order to mitigate the problem of Japan's shrinkingpopulation, Taichi Sakaiya, director-general of the EconomicPlanning Agency, told the press Friday.
Such a proposal ''should not be rejected outright,'' he argued.
But pension burdens, job-placement, public security, cultural friction and other urban problems that could possiblyarise due to increased migration need to be thought about, he suggested.
To implement such a program, the number of laborersadmitted, job position, relevant skills and country-by-countryquota also need to be considered, he added.
