China to focus on high-speed transport services

BEIJING - China is planning to build over 10,000 kilometers of high-speed railways, including a 500-700km-per-hour magnetic suspension system covering the Beijing-Shanghai, Beijing-Harbin, Lianyungang-Lanzhou and Zhejiang-Jiangxi links.

At the same time, efforts will be made to raise the speed of passenger trains of the existing railways to over 200km per hour, and that of the freight trains to over 150km per hour, says Hu Zixiang, director of the Integrated Transport Research Institute under the Chinese State Development Planning Commission.

The move is part of a 20-year upgrade of national transport systems, including highways, waterways and air transport services.

As part of the railways devlopment, 34 major hubs and 55 freight transport centers will be built.

In the highway sector, 12 national artery highways, including five running north-south and seven east-west, with a total length of 35,000km will be built by 2020. Meanwhile, 60,000km of expressways will be built to form a good highway network.

In water transport, a comfortable, highly efficient, high-speed waterway passenger transport system will be built to serve coastal, river and lake areas.

In the air transport sector, a number of airports will be built or updated. In particular, the efforts will be concentrated on modernizing the 41 airports in 40 cities which account for over 90 percent of the national total air passengers. The air transport administration and service system will also be consolidated and improved.
