Indonesia to open route to Singapore

JAKARTA - Jatayu Airlines is planning to cover the regional market by opening its Surabaya-Singapore route with transits in Batam and Medan on December 19.

"From Surabaya we fly at 6:45 am to Batam. Then, with the same plane, [we fly] to Medan and on to Singapore by Boeing 727-200, which has a capacity of 150 seats," the airline company's commercial manager Agus Sugiarto said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Agus, who was in Surabaya for an introduction of the new route to the public in Surabaya and surrounding areas, said that in the first stage Jatayu will cover the new route once every day at a promotional rate, especially for the Batam-Medan and Medan-Singapore route.

"On the Surabaya-Batam route, we are the pioneers, because in the past passengers wishing to fly to Batam must first make a transit call in Jakarta. The present schedule is therefore time-saving," Agus said.

In the meantime, the flight from Singapore will start at 2:45 pm and arrive in Surabaya at 7:25 pm after a transit call in Medan and Batam.

Agus said the new route will not only serve tourists, but also Indonesian migrant workers on their way to Batam, Singapore and Malaysia.

In the past, Indonesian migrant workers in Singapore had difficulties in getting home to Surabaya. They first had to make a transit call in Jakarta. But on this flight, this factor is eliminated, Agus said.

In the first stage, Jatayu projected its occupancy rate on the new route at 70-75 percent. "We will try to expand our market in the next three months. If everything goes fine, the flight frequency may be raised," Agus said.
