JAKARTA - The
Indonesian government is set to speed up the
construction and completion of two mega-infrastructure
projects valued at more than US$1 billion, an official
said.
State Minister for Settlement and Area
Infrastructure Soenarno said the US$317.65 million
Suramadu bridge spanning the sea between Surabaya and
Madura in East Java and the $700 million Bojonegoro port
project in Banten are priority projects to be carried
out ahead of schedule.
The 2.1-kilometer
Suramadu bridge is scheduled to be completed in 2006 and
the Bojonegoro port modernization in 2004-05.
Soenarno said the government has decided to use
a $400 million loan already pledged by China to finance
the Suramadu project. He said $150 million of the loan
fund will be used for the construction of the bridge and
$250 million for the bridge electricity systems and
illumination.
Meanwhile, preparation for the
expansion and modernization of the Bojonegoro port has
been progressing well, he said. President Megawati
Sukarnoputri will soon officiate the start of work in
the project, he added.
The project will be
financed from the state budget and investors.
State-owned port operator PT Pelindo will put up Rp300
billion ($35.3 million), Soenarno said.
