Vietnam to build power dams

HANOI - Vietnam's Central Highlands province of Dac Lac is planning to build six more hydro-power plants on the Srepok river to power local economic development, adding to two already built or under construction, the provincial administration said.

Of the six newly proposed plants, the first two, known as Srepok 3 and Srepok 4, will have a capacity of 137 megawatts and 33MW respectively, according to plans drawn up by Electricity Consulting Company 2, Electricity of Vietnam and Dac Lac People's Committee.

The remaining four plants are to be built at Duc Xuyen, Buon Tua Sra, Buon Kuop and Chu Phong Krong, located in the districts of Krong N, Cu Jut, Buon Don and Krong Ana. The first plant built on the river was the Dray H'linh 1 power plant which opened in 1990. A second power station, Dray H'linh 2, is under construction with a designed capacity of 16MW.

The Srepok river, a tributary of the Mekong, rises in the Chu Yang mountains and passes through the provinces of Lam Dong, Gia Lai and Dac Lac before entering Cambodia. The total area of the Srepok river basin is 30,100 square kilometers, providing large potential for electricity.
