HP to ship a million printers to India

MUMBAI - In a bid to tap the growing market in India, Hewlett Packard (HP), one of the leaders in imaging and printing, said it will ship one million printers to the country in 2005.

"We are confident about our growth in India and hope to ship in one million printers this year," HP Imaging and Printing Group vice president Ravi Aggarwal said.

As part of its expansion plans in India, HP is to spread its wings beyond the six cities of Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. "We will set up shop in 400 cities within the next 18 months with the focus mainly on the SMB and lower class segment," he said.

The company would also focus on improving customer experience in smaller towns with more than 50% of the investment going beyond metros.

Meanwhile, HP continued to dominate its businesses across the country according to the latest results for the first quarter issued by the International Data Center (IDC).

Commenting on HP's performance for the quarter, Aggarwal said, "The growth has been fueled by a leap in the laser and inkjet businesses, as well as consumer notebooks and home PC business where HP grew at more than 10% as compared to the market growth."

During the quarter, HP registered a growth of 112% in sales of color laser printers and the market share for the company stood at 80%. It also increased market share in the copier segment from 10% in the 2003-04 to 40% in 2004-05.
