Takeda ranked top Japan prescription drug seller

TOKYO - Takeda Pharmaceutical logged the highest domestic prescription pharmaceutical sales in fiscal 2005, according to the tabulations of drug and health care industry research company IMS Japan KK.

IMS Japan has released its results since fiscal 2003, with Takeda snagging first place each year.

Domestic sales of prescription drugs totaled 7.74 trillion yen (US$69.4 billion) in fiscal 2005, up 5.5% from the previous year. The companies at the top of rankings enjoyed double-digit growth in sales of drugs to treat lifestyle disorders such as high blood pressure and cholesterol.

Takeda held onto the top spot with sales of 604.1 billion yen in



the year ended March 31, largely due to brisk sales of Blopress, its drug for high blood pressure.

GlaxoSmithKline KK, the Japanese arm of British pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline Plc, jumped up four spots in the ranking to 10th at 205.9 billion yen, reaching the top 10 for the first time on sales of its antidepressant drug.

Eisai Co. climbed two spots to sixth on sales of 263.8 billion yen , buoyed by increased sales of Aricept, its drug to treat Alzheimer's disease.

Sankyo Co.'s sales declined 5.4%to 260.7 billion yen, dropping the firm two spots to eighth, because the patent expired on its blockbuster antihyperlipidemic drug Mevalotin. The drugmaker was handled separately from the merged company Daiichi Sankyo for the fiscal 2005 ranking.

Banyu Pharmaceutical tumbled from ninth place to 11th at 204.6 billion yen due to delays in introducing new products.
