SURABAYA - Japan in the
next few years will remain a potential market for
Indonesia's coffee products, particularly from East Java
province, an official said.
"The East Java's
coffee products are still in great demand in Japan,
besides the United States and other foreign markets,"
Isdarmawan, chairman of the East Java-branchof the
Indonesian Exporters Association, said on Wednesday.
The province annually exports 40,000 to 45,000
tons of coffee, 15,000 tons of which is exported to
Japan, he added.
He admitted that the
exported-coffee are supplied by local coffee producers
as well as from other provinces, including Bali, Flores,
South Sulawesi and Lampung.
"The other
provinces' supplies are recorded at 15,000 to 20,000
tons to meet foreign market demand," he said.
The
association will constantly encourage the local
exporters to promote the commodity to other foreign
markets.
In the fiscal year 2003, the province's
coffee production was recorded at 41,000 tons.
It is estimated to decrease to 39,000 tons in
2004, he said.
The decrease is caused by some
reasons, including the fluctuation of the price in the
local market, which recently stands at about Rp5,400
(US$0.61) per kilogram, he said.
