Minister promises boycott if Sony exits Indonesia

CIMAHI - Indonesian Minister of Manpower and Transmigration Jacob Nuwawea said he will campaign for a boycott the use of Sony products from all over Indonesia if Sony Electric Indonesia (SEI) closes its plant in this country next year.

Speaking to the press here Monday, Minister Jacob Nuwawea said: "As a citizen I will campaign in all Indonesian towns for abandoning the Indonesian people's tendency to using Sony products if, once again, Sony Electric Indonesia decides to close its plant next year". Minister Nuwawea was here Monday to open a Trauma Center, a special facility for treatment of victims of occupational accidents, at Mitra Anugerah Lestari Hospital at Cibaligo.

According to Nuwawea, it would be unjust for Sony to sell its products in the Indonesian market after they close their plant in Indonesia. The minister said he knew exactly that SEI had experienced a manpower problem at the end of year 2000, but he added that it would be unreasonable for the Japanese company to close its plant under the pretext of a manpower problem.

He said he had invited the management of Sony Corporation to come to his office on Wednesday to discuss matters related to the planned closure of their plant. He said he would raise the question as to what brought them to such a decision. "If the problem relates only to that of manpower, I will try to solve it," he said.
