Henry C K Liu's
reading of Hong Kong's politico-social situation is
nothing but deja vu of pre-1997 mentalities [Why Hong Kong is in crisis, Jul 4].
In those days, people expressing their desires for
democracy in Hong Kong were easily labeled as
pro-British and thus pro-colonialism, as it was said
people should wait until Chinese rules to endow on them
democracy instead of allowing the British to steal the
limelight. Such paradox is almost forgotten now in Hong
Kong and mainland China, except by some real idiots who
can find no other means to pose themselves as "smarter
than thou". Hong Kong people's desires for democracy and
the protection of their civil rights cannot be more
genuinely revealed than in the July 1 march. The tally
of half a million was in fact under-estimation, as many
who could not reach the procession destination due to
the crowds were not counted. Liu is advised to read
carefully every line of the government Bill on National
Security. It needs only average mental capacity to find
clauses blatantly encroaching on people's freedom
therein. He is further advised to take note of the
statement by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao to Hong Kong
Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa that the latter's
government should understand, trust and unite with Hong
Kong people. Wong Kwok
