BEIJING - China has
targeted an annual cotton yarn output of 14-15 million
tons by 2010, a big leap forward from the 9.83 million
tons in 2003.
To achieve the target, the country
must adopt technological progress, industrial upgrading,
innovation, fostering of its own brands and application
of information technology, said Xu Wenying, chairman of
the China Association of Cotton Textile Industry.
China's cotton textile industry holds great
potential as its consumption of fibers is still at a low
level. Compared with average per capita fiber
consumption of 20-30 kilograms in developed countries,
China's consumption is now only 11kg per capita,
providing much room for development.
The
country's cotton textile industry realized 380 billion
yuan (US$46 billion) in total output value in 2003,
output of cotton and cotton/chemical mixed yarn reached
9,835,800 tons, and cotton fabrics, 37.464 billion
meters. Export of cotton fabrics stood at $10.781
billion in 2003.
The output of cotton yarn was
9.83 million tons in 2003, accounting for 94.87% of the
total national consumption, and output of cotton fabrics
was 37.4 billion meters, 86.54% of the total
consumption.
More than half the production
equipment in China's cotton textile sector have been
upgraded to an advanced level, presenting an increasing
proportion of blowing-carding-drawing units, combing
machine, automatic bobbin winder and shuttles looms.
