China's domain name .CN tops 402,000

BEIJING - China's domain name ".CN" had hit 402,291 by the end of August, according to the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC).

The number of domain names in the world has reached a record 64.5 million, averaging one for every 100 persons. China's state-level domain name .CN has grown the fastest in the world.

The total number of domain names registered in the top 20 countries in terms of GDP accounts for 86% of the world's total domain names, with North America accounting for 31% and China, Japan and South Korea, 6%. The domain name .CN increased by 89% in 2003.

The rapid growth of domain name registration is attributable to strong Internet activities and activities by small businesses.
