SEOUL - South Korean
appliance makers have secured a dominant position in
China's digital television market, with LG Electronics
Inc boasting the top market share, a Chinese agency said
on Thursday.
According to the Chinese market
research firm Information Center Data (ICD), LG
Electronics posted the top share of 16 percent in
China's digital TV market for the first nine months of
this year.
LG ranked second last year with a
share of 18 percent, but ascended to the top post this
year on the back of strong sales of its projection TVs,
which account for 87 percent of China's entire digital
TV market, ICD said.
Trailing LG, Samsung
Electronics Co came in second with a market share of
12.8 percent by the end of the third quarter.
Considering the No 4-ranked Philips' 8.4-percent
and No 5-ranked Panasonic's 8-percent shares, South
Korean firms have virtually seized control of the
Chinese digital TV market, ICD noted.
By
segment, LG has stuck to its position as market leader
in sales of projection TVs for the sixth consecutive
month since April, with its market share averaging 17.5
percent as of the end of September, compared with
runner-up Toshiba's 12.5 percent.
In sales of
plasma display panel (PDP) and liquid crystal display
(LCD) TVs, LG ranked second with market shares of 19
percent and 19.2 percent, respectively, in the first
nine months. In both projection and LCD TVs, LG recorded
a one-notch rise in its ranking.
China's digital
TV market is expected to grow 45 percent from 690,000
units last year to about 1 million units this year.
