Japan rescues 6 Chinese near Senkakus; eight fishermen still missing

Japan and China on Aug. 12 continued searching for Chinese fishermen missing in the East China Sea, a rare act of cooperation in an area normally marked by tensions between the two countries.

A Japan Coast Guard patrol vessel the day earlier rescued six crew members of the Chinese fishing boat Minjinyu 05891, which sank after a collision with a Greek freighter 67 kilometers northwest of Uotsurishima, one of the Senkaku Islands, between Okinawa Prefecture and Taiwan.

Patrol vessels and aircraft of Japan’s coast guard were combing the waters for eight crew members who remain missing. Read More
