South Korean heartthrob Song Joong-ki’s modest hometown and childhood home have become major tourist attractions.

Actor Song Joong-ki attained international fame, thanks to the grand “Descendants of the Sun” success. When the drama was being aired earlier this year, some of its filming locations had become tourist destinations. Now, as Song Joong-ki and his “Descendants of the Sun” co-star Song Hye-kyo have become the most popular actors in South Korea, everything related to them are garnering limelight.

Fans from around the globe have been so enthralled by Song Joong-ki that now even his small hometown has become an international attraction, Drama Fever reported. Song Joong-ki grew up in the idyllic town of Saejeong-gol, which is in Daejeon, South Korea. The town has only around 20 households, and was almost unknown before Song Joong-ki’s rise to mega stardom.

While Song Joong-ki’s family currently lives in Seoul, curious fans are still able to visit his childhood home, which has been opened to tourists, the report said. Saejeong-gol residents have also been very welcoming to anyone who wants to visit their town, and have put up banners and signs guiding excited fans.

Earlier this year, the South Korean government planned to turn places where the KBS 2TV drama filmed into tourist destinations. It said the sites would be developed, in cooperation with the Korea Tourism Organization, to feature traditional and contemporary Korean culture.

In Seoul, the sites would include chain stores and cafes operated by a local coffee brand where Song’s character, Yoo Si-jin, dated Kang Mo-yeon, the character played by Song Hye-kyo. In Paju, located north of Seoul, it would be Camp Greaves, a former American military base that served as shooting site for the drama’s army scenes. There is also a former mine in Taebaek, an eastern city.
