Sports: South Korea opens Thomas Cup campaign on a winning note

South Korea began their Thomas Cup finals campaign brightly by winning the opening matches played at Kunshan Sports Centre, on Sunday. South Korea thrashed Germany 5-0 in the Group C opening matches.

World number nine, Son Wan-ho opened account for South Korea when he easily beat Marc Zwiebler 21-13, 21-19 in 33 minutes.

This was followed by world number four, Kim Gi-jung/Kim Sa-rang who tamed Fabian Holzer/Johannes Pistorius 21-6, 21-7, in just 23 minutes.

Jeon Hyeok Jin continued the winning momentum after beating Kai Schaefer 21-9, 21-18 while Ko Sung-hyun/Shin Baek-cheol beat Mark Lamsfuss/Josche Zurwonne 21-16, 21-13.

South Korea’s third singles, Heo Kwang-hee confirmed their winning point after beating Lars Schaenzler 21-10, 21-18 in 33 minutes. They will then meet England in the second group matches tomorrow.

Thailand also started well after taming India 3-2 in the Group B matches. Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk who is currently ranked 26th forced a rubber match before upsetting Ajay Jayaram 21-16, 12-21,21-14 in 46 minutes. Read More
