On Tuesday, the actor visited Sumatra and aired his views on saving the majestic creatures. DiCaprio took to Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and appealed to the people of the world to sign a petition to save the elephants of Sumatra.

“A world-class biodiversity hotspot, Indonesia’s Leuser Ecosystem is one of the most important areas of intact rainforests left in Southeast Asia and home to critically endangered Sumatran orangutans. But palm oil expansion is destroying this unique place. Let’s work together to stand up and #SaveLeuserEcosystem,” he wrote on his Facebook page.

Animal activist Dahlan M Isa who started this petition with a single signature, and now has over 35,000 supporters.

In his petition to the Indonesian president Joko Widodo, Isa stated that the Leuser Ecosystem is no longer protected. “Major disaster is waiting for us and generation to come. The Ministry of Domestic Affairs had submitted their review and requested to revise the Spatial Plan, which clearly stated to include The Leuser Ecosystem into National Strategic Area. Yet, the review was never followed up by The Aceh Government. The Leuser Ecosystem (KEL) is the only place where four rare species (orangutans, elephants, rhino, and Sumatran tigers) could co-exists in one habitat. But now, roads is being constructed through the forests. Mining activities had occurred in mountains. Plantation permit for thousands of hectares is being issued easily. The forest where customary people live for generations is being jeopardized. Our river dried, except when it is flooded and causing landslides. Leuser as the prosperity symbol of Acehnese is under major threat,” he stated.
