New Year: street war in Hong Kong

Hong Kong’s police clashed with protesters on Tuesday, leaving dozens injured in one of the territory’s worst street violence ever recorded. Officers used batons and pepper spray to disperse the crowd as protesters pelted them with bricks, orange rubbish bins and glass bottles. The “riot” took place in the busy shopping and residential district of Mong Kok, where unlicensed food vendors had set up to serve the crowds gathered for the first day of the Lunar New Year, it has been reported. Government officials from the food safety department tried to shut down the vendors as part of a clampdown, but they faced resistance from supporters of the street hawkers.
