India’s Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya, Hyderabad Central University vice-chancellor Appa Rao and two others have been booked on Monday for abetting the suicide of a scholar at the University of Hyderabad.
Officials at Gachibowli police station said the labour minister was also booked under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act for allegedly orchestrating the suspension of Rohith Vemula and four other Dalit students from the university hostel.
“A case has been booked against four accused and investigation is on,” Madhapur Assistant Commissioner of Police Ramana Kumar said.
Vemula, a 26-year old Dalit research scholar, committed suicide in the Hyderabad Central University campus on Sunday evening.
